Aging In Place: A new home for 2 generations

The New Home replaces the family house built in the 1950’s.  In their new design they wanted to include some of their favorite aspects of the former house including bay windows, covered porch, vaulted ceilings, and a sun room.  But because this was to be the home for 2 generations we included elements of universal design to allow them to age in place.  These include flush entrances to eliminate steps to the living level, clearances around all work areas including Kitchen, Baths and Laundry, wider hallways and doors. In the Kitchen we eliminated all upper cabinets and provided more base cabinet storage and 2 closet pantries. In Living Spaces, we lowered the window sills to allow for views of the neighborhood while seated or standing.  New smart home devises will be installed to allow for easier controls of lighting, heating etc.
